The PremNet family of Voice transport interface modules includes both T1/E1 and 4-Wire Voice. These modules provide a unique and powerful set of voice applications over the PremNet broadband access system. By providing native-speed transport over T3 (45 Mbps), Unilink (100 Mbps), SONET/SDH OC-3c/STM-1 (155 Mbps), and ATM OC-3c/STM-1 (155 Mbps), PremNet seamlessly connects geographically dispersed devices that may be hundreds of miles apart.
Milgo offers two versions of the PremNet broadband access system. The PremNet 5000 supports up to eight interface modules and the PremNet Branch supports up to three.
PremNet Voice interface modules include:
T1/E1 (three versions)
4-wire voice (two versions)
Choice of
Network Management Interfaces
The PremNet family of interface modules - and the entire PremNet network - can be managed
from a variety of network-management platforms. This allows you to use the Milgo CMS
management system, your existing Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) compliant
network management system, or the PremNet local on-board management system (via an
asynchronous terminal attached to any node on the network).
T1/E1 Interface Modules
The PremNet T1/E1 interface modules provide transparent transport across the PremNet
backbone. Each differs from the others only in its data rate and physical interface. All
three versions (DS1, DS1A, and E1) provide a generic point-to-point transport interface
for balanced, twisted-pair, bipolar digital telephony signals commonly occurring at
specific points in the network - for example, digital signal cross-connects or equipment
terminations. These signals are generated and terminated by voice or data multiplexing
equipment such as channel banks and digital radio equipment.
T1/E1 Card Features
PABX-to-PABX Trunking
Linking multiple PABXs over extended distances is accomplished easily using the T1 or E1
modules. Up to 720 (with DSI) or 930 (with E1) PCM voice channels can be transported over
the PremNet backbone.
Software-Configurable Diagnostics
These modules are software-configurable and equipped with a wide range of configuration,
testing and alarm features. Remote and local loopback is used for testing near-end and
far-end TX and RX ports. Pulse-shape selection, also known as line build-out, selects the
appropriate receive output signal pulse shape for the cable type and length. Self-testing,
bipolar-violation detection, alarm-indication signaling, and error monitoring also are
available.
T1/E1 Restrictions
The T1/E1 interface modules are governed by CFR 47, Chapter 1, Part 68, which states that
network connection for these modules can be made only through a "totally
protected" channel service unit (CSU), providing billing information and encoded
analog content protection.
While these modules are not intended to be used for speed conversion between different protocols (e.g., 1.544 Mbps to 2.048 Mbps), it is possible to convert between dissimilar physical interfaces, such as DS1A twisted pair (2.048 Mbps) and E1 G.703 coax (2.048 Mbps).

4-Wire Voice Interface Modules
PremNet 4-wire voice interface modules provide bi-directional, transparent transport of
voice or voice-band data circuits (300 to 3,400 Hz) across the PremNet broadband access
system. Typical applications supported by the 4-wire voice modules include transport of
voice channels between PBXs, public trunk-line emulation to support modem networks, and
analog radio-receiver transmission (from a remote receiver to a receiver at a central
site).
4-Wire Voice Card Features
Each version of the PremNet 4-wire voice interface module provides a Voice Frequency (VF) channel. All modules support an additional in-band signaling channel.
Software-Selectable Time Slots for Voice Channels
The PremNet system assigns one time slot (backplane) to each 4-wire voice module in the
chassis. Each time slot is divided into 32 full-duplex, 64-Kbps voice channels, any of
which can be assigned to any one of the 8 physical ports on each module.
Ear and Mouth (E & M) Application
Ear and Mouth (E&M) Module - Transports voice channels between private branch exchanges (PBXs) and is ear-originated. The signaling channel detects the application of office battery voltage (-48 Vdc), causing a relay closure at the other end of the channel. This signals an "off-hook" condition that alerts the PBX to an incoming VF signal.
Push to Talk (PTT) Application
Push to Talk (PTT) Module - Used to interface with remote radio. The signaling channel detects a switch closure, causing a relay closure at the other end of the channel. This relay is then used to turn on the radio transmitter.
